Aesa Jewelry - Antiques of the future world
Brooklyn native Randi Mates is the designer behind the New York City-based jewelry line, AESA. Unceasingly fascinated with the fecundity of the natural world, Mates uses 14 & 18k gold, sterling silver, bronze, silk and such natural effluvia as pyrite, quartz, and rough diamonds to create jewels that explore the boundaries between what is mysterious and what is known.
Formerly a historian of material culture, Mates began training as a classical Greek and Roman metal smith as a way to augment her experiences in the dusty libraries that were her stomping ground. Suddenly, her intellectual interests in things both arcane and innovative came to assume three-dimensional form. AESA jewelry was born in late 2006 when Mates could no longer ignore the alchemical siren song of the molten metals.
For the Pangaea Pop-Up, AESA presents a cross-section of it’s designs, with a number of pieces made especially for the occasion:
From the Herkimer and Fool’s Gold collections, earrings and necklaces evoke rock and nugget-like forms. These geometric shapes, wrought in silver and gold, some encrusted with hidden diamonds, move beyond the sculptural to become iconic. These forms are also woven into and strung onto silk and hemp hand-dyed in a palette of soft, watercolor-like shades to celebrate the dreamy, romantic days of summer.
From the Machine de Terre collection, AESA presents a series of necklaces, bracelets and earrings featuring undulating forms, recalling spines and ribbons. Sensual and luxurious, these jewels strike a balance between the ancient and the futuristic. Also offered from this collection are a number of necklaces of hand-cut agate and quartz cut into bold, geometric shapes and sheathed in gold. These pieces, rather than romanticizing the natural world, seek to borrow from and honor the earth’s power and the immense forces of nature that brought forth these materials.
Sculptural, totemic and raw, AESA is fine jewelry with a mysterious edge.
