Cody Chandler catches his subjects at vulnerable moments creating images that feel highly emotive. Born at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in South Carolina, his upbringing has played a major influence in his work. Stories of "fire and brimstone" were regularly shared in his hometown along the Bible Belt. As such, Chandler has developed a metaphysical view of the world in which the natural elements - earth, water, fire, mist - are a reoccurring theme in his work.
For Secrets, Gallery Space's current exhibit, Chandler shows "Amanda & Alex (Venial Kiss)". There is in fact a secret behind the intimate image, but the secret is not explicit. Chandler explains, "the story would not only expose the subjects in the photo, but also rob the viewer of any emotional response brought on by personal experience."
Chandler recently printed a limited edition book of photographs entitled, The Well Ain't Dry. The visual essay of landscape, nature and portraits, pays homage to life in the country. It is is available through Capricious Bookshop in Brooklyn.
