For Gallery Spaces current exhibit
Secrets, artist Hisham Akira Bharoocha shows a long-limbed calf sleeping peacefully in thick meadow grass. Warm light pours over the calf's limp body. Bharoocha's recent work explores the idea of images generated in the mind during meditation, dreaming, daydreaming and daily life. With no real point of time or place, there is a sense of removal between Bharoocha and his ethereal, dream-like landscapes and portraits. Still the series has a classic aesthetic quality- subjects are carefully composed in the graphic square format. The formality seems an appropriate juxtaposition against work that dually "shows the absurdity and logic of how each mind works."
Hisham Akira Bharoocha is an artist currently based in Brooklyn, New York. He concentrates on creating music, visual art and photography. Bharoocha has had solo exhibitions of his work at D'Amelio Terres gallery in New York, as well as Vieeshai, a state run space in the Netherlands. He has been in numerous group exhibitions at galleries such as such as Deitch Projects, John Connelly Presents, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. His work has been published in Art Forum, V, i-D, Flaunt, Tokion and Blend.
