Hennessey + Ingalls Book Signing: Presence: The Invisible Portrait by Chris Buck
Thursday, October 18th 6-8 pm
Presence is a conceptual and ironic take on the perverse search for celebrity. The book features fifty sittings with Robert De Niro, Jay Leno, Chevy Chase, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Cindy Sherman, Russell Brand, Snoop Dogg, Nick Cave, David Lynch, and more. Only in this new series, portrait photographer Chris Buck makes his famous subjects hide from the camera—and the viewer.
Chris Buck has been a professional photographer for more than twenty years and shoots for such clients as GQ, Esquire, Microsoft, and IBM. He was the first recipient of the prestigious Arnold Newman Portrait Prize.

Hennessey + Ingalls Book of the Week: Raw+material=art: Found, Scavenged and Upcycled"
Tristan Manco reveals how artists of all kinds are bringing creativity to basic, often unglamorous materials from broken bottles, old flip-flops, and skateboards to sustainable resources such as wood, straw, and paper. Through hundreds of illustrations, in-depth artist profiles, and detailed discussions of various materials, he showcases the work of more than thirty innovative and inspiring artists from around the world, from the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and Chile to the UK, Spain, France, and Italy. Some of the artists have invented new techniques American artist Rosemarie Fiore uses fireworks to create paintings while others have pushed the envelope in the presentation of their work by creating fresh, dynamic forms of display. Whether it is Chilean artist Carlos Zuniga 's creative use of text pages from found books and directories or Brazilian sculptor Henrique Oliveira 's ambitious organic forms in salvaged plywood, the book highlights how imaginative approaches to media and technique encourage us to look at the world in new ways. The newest development in alternative art: the use of salvaged and repurposed materials by contemporary artists.

Hennessey + Ingalls Book of the Week: Information Graphics
How complex ideas can be communicated via graphics ''If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough.''--Albert Einstein
Our everyday lives are filled with a massive flow of information that we must interpret in order to understand the world we live in. Considering this complex variety of data floating around us, sometimes the best -- or even only -- way to communicate is visually. This unique book presents a fascinating historical perspective on the subject, highlighting the work of the masters of the profession who have created a number of breakthroughs that have changed the way we communicate. 'Information Graphics' has been conceived and designed not just for designers or graphics professionals, but for anyone interested in the history and practice of communicating visually.
The in-depth introductory section, illustrated with over 60 images (each accompanied by an explanatory caption), features essays by Sandra Rendgen, Paolo Ciuccarelli, Richard Saul Wurman, and Simon Rogers; looking back all the way to primitive cave paintings as a means of communication, this introductory section gives readers an excellent overview of the subject. The second part of the book is entirely dedicated to contemporary works by the current most renowned professionals, presenting 200 graphics projects, with over 400 examples -- each with a fact sheet and an explanation of methods and objectives -- divided into chapters by the subjects Location, Time, Category, and Hierarchy.

Hennessey + Ingalls Book of the Week: "Leroy Grannis - Surf Photography of the 1960s & 1970s"

Hennessey + Ingalls Book of the Week: You and I by Ryan McGinley
Ryan McGinley makes large-scale color photographs of his friends, a group that forms part of New York's Lower East Side youth culture. He uses photography to break down barriers between public and private spheres of activity. His subjects are willing collaborators: drawn from skateboard, music, and graffiti subcultures, they perform for the camera and expose themselves with a frank self-awareness that is distinctly contemporary. The results form a portrait of a generation that is savvy about visual culture and acutely aware of how identity can be communicated through photography. McGinley's newest work signals a departure from the urban youth culture images for which he is best known; he has been working in natural settings outside New York City, creating specific situations for his subjects to lose themselves in the moment. McGinley embraces nature as a site of freedom and captures a sense of buoyancy and release.

Hennessey + Ingalls Book of the Week: Skull Style
One of the most ancient symbols used in the history of mankind is shown in the most surprising and modern way in this book. Formerly an emblem of evil and mortality, the skull has been transformed into an avant-garde design element used in the most cutting-edge art, chic interiors and vanguard style of the moment. Whether embellished on costly T-shirts, woven on limited edition chairs, and even encrusted with diamonds sold at an art auction for $100 million, the skull is no longer just a daunting memento of our frail mortality but a contemporary figure of fashion. This 500-page book shows how this once morbid trinket of death has been reinvented into the much-desired decoration by the trendsetters of tomorrow.
